John1:1-5 Commentary
The John Project - Introduction
The John Project is my visual interpretation of the book of John, which is one of the four books in the Bible highlighting the life and message of Jesus. My initial goal for this project, back when I started it in December of 2010 was to simply spend more time on two of my loves: making art and studying the Bible, which 99% of the time take place at a coffee shop, usually at the Empresso in Stockton, California. The idea of illustrating the Bible gradually evolved a year prior to 2010, after realizing that I simply wasn't spending as much time in my sketchbook and reading the Bible. My coffee shop time to create a body of art illustrating the Bible was a practical solution. The Bible, of course, has centuries of tradition filled with artists who have successfully highlighted the life of Christ and at the pinnacle of that list are Leonardo, Rembrandt and Michelangelo. As much as I pursue artistic excellence, my goal for the John Project was to simply grow closer to God as I read through this tiny book that takes a couple of hours to read. I wanted to read John with an intensity that I never had before, meditating on each word as I developed mental word pictures that gradually evolved into these drawings. This proect is my personal journey through the entire Gospel or Good News of John, a journey in which I spend an average of at least one hour a day every day, every week, every month, every year for almost 9 years now. The completion of this book will not be realized for about another 11 years but I wish to introduce it as it is in progress. My intent is to walk my audience through this artistic journey as they witness the evolving drawings through the years ahead and perhaps be inspired to learn more about Jesus.
